Raising Dragons Dragons in Our Midst Book 1 Bryan Davis Books
I have had remarkable success with non-mainstream authors. I have read plenty YA, my story, and thrillers by authors who have never seen a best-seller's list, and found them well written and enjoyable. This includes Christian authors, which I mention because most of the bad reviews here seem to focus on the religious aspects of the book. Those people need to read the description before buying the book. That said, this was very poorly written. The concept was really neat. The variation on tradition Arthurian legend was interesting. However, the dialogue and characterization was awkward at times. The main protagonists seemed meant to resonate with normal kids, but came across more like Rod and Todd Flanders from The Simpsons. The plot had a habit of building to an action point and then just dropping off rather than transitioning. The way events unfolded, I really feel it would have done better as two or three shorter books.
The worst example of bad writing for me came in literally the last few pages. I mean, well after the final showdown. Page 358 out of 363. I won't spoil any details, but a protagonist is captured, and then returns two pages later totally unharmed, and everyone literally acts as if nothing happened. No explanation of how they escaped, not even a "I'm back." They just walk in and go about their business as normal. I think you could literally remove those pages from the book and miss nothing.
I really wanted to like it, but I will not be continuing this series. I think other readers will enjoy it if they can get passed this, but I am done.

Raising Dragons Dragons in Our Midst Book 1 Bryan Davis Books Reviews
Delivered in perfect condition and these are by far some of the best books I’ve read! Can’t go wrong here!
...and he prefers to play video games or watch movies versus reading! My sister likes it too. Here's the reviews with ages, just as a reference point.
Age 11 It's good because it involves God in a realistic way. There aren't cuss words. It isn't gross and what I liked was that it was in the "real world" and didn't talk about evolution. Evolution is annoying...
Age 12 I like Raising Dragons because Billy is a cool dragon boy. And Bonnie has wings! Wings, I tell you! Mmm...chicken wings...
I was a little surprised that the principal was (*deleted for spoiler*!)
Age 16 Billy and Bonnie--fully dragon, fully human. Parents, dragons transformed in the time of King Arthur and Camelot.
This alone intrigued me, though I wasn't quite sure where it was headed. Slightly confusing, granted, but it straightens out after the first few chapters. Billy is a confused boy, just coming into maturity. Bonnie is rooted in God's love, and an excellent role model. I learned a few things from her! Lessons well learned are priceless...but this book is, fortunately, well-priced. The pacing wasn't anything crazy (I'm a stickler about that). I can't really say anything else without giving the story away...
A ring, a mission, a Father. The core of the story is hard, sweet, and for all ages.
If you like intrigue, epic poems, developed characters, and more, then this is for you! So join us on the epic adventure of an...eccentric...professor, creepy principal, dragon children, betrayal, knights, friends and foes--you won't be sorry.
*interruption*
Age 11 It's fortunate that I didn't cut my finger while chopping a carrot...
Age 16 What does that have to do with the book?!
Age 12 Food. And cool dragons.
Age 11 I don't know.
Age 16 Okay, we're leaving now. Anyways, have fun with the book!
*conversation bomb*
Age 12 Don't forget the chicken wings!!! And they need to make a movie out of this.
ALL Yeah! Make a movie, please! Without totally ruining the book, that is.
My 12 year old read this book and when I asked him if he wanted to review the book he said, "5 stars! Because it's AWESOME!" That's all I could get out of him, so I hope it's helpful.
Love this series. We've found our new family read aloud. It's very good, and entertaining enough for Mom, Dad and all the kids. The kids ask for this story every night. My husband had been reading another book, he stopped reading that to listen in while I read to the kids. )
14 year old grandson loved this book. Wanted the whole series!
I am an avid reader, or to be perfectly honest I 'was' an avid reader during my youth. Reading books was a passion for me, the worlds created and explored created a new reality to delve into with vigor. As I have matured I think on those stories and tales with fondness, for it was in the pages of those hundreds of books that I discovered character. Not merely characters, but character of principle. People may find it a variety of ways, and some find it not at all, but for me it was at the words and letters crafted by skilled artisans that the principles that I now live by took root.
I now have children of my own and am very intentional about what is allowed into their hands to read as they grow and mature. When they are of age, this book will be one of the first in their hands. Why? Simply because there is no better teacher than parable, no more vivid example than ones own imaginations, and when these things are combined into a deliberate message about character, honor, faith...well that is what I so desperately want to instill in my children. For the parents out there I recommend this book, this whole series and more, as a way to offer your children a wonderful and enchanting guide to bring them down the road to chivalry, chastity, and faith. Bryan Davis writes with the scope of Tolkien, the focus of Lewis, the grandeur of Verne, and most of all the heart of Christ.
This is a pretty good story. Just enough dragon lore, a full pallet of characters dragon slayer’s, dragons living as humans among us, an Angel, Dragon sympathizers and of course family. Shake this up with careful character development, a fast-paced plot, betrayal, chase action, & near death battle scenes – and you have a solid read. Can’t wait to see where the series goes.
