This is a highly entertaining book with a larger dose of realism than usual for a grand fantasy novel. The characters are complex and believable and generally stay away from the classic tropes and clichés of the genre. No perfect boy scouts who have never touched a blade before a month ago mowing down hordes of enemies here. That being said combat is the one real weakness. The fights are too fast and breathless making the scenes end far to quickly, but are otherwise well thought out and have a commendable sense of gravity.

All in all this a great first outing for the author and I highly recommend this book.
