Sudden Prey John Sandford 9780425157534 Books Reviews
If you like Sanford's Prey series, you will like this one. These books are not for everyone. They are tightly written and pretty much to a formula. They remind me of the old radio mysteries. You knew from the first minute what was the big outcome and spent the rest of the time savoring the details. The characters you love from the previous (and subsequent) Prey series are here doing what they do. This is a thoroughly entertaining read. If you are expecting literature, look to Faulkner, but if you want to be entertained while at the beach or over a rainy weekend -- this is your cup of tea. This is the ultimate in cheap entertainment. On a cost per hour basis, this is a real bargain. You won't be disappointed if you keep your expectations in check. If you expect the ride you get from the other Sanford books, you will find it here. If you are looking for profound enlightenment -- look elsewhere.
I grew up and spent 40 years of my life in this part of the country and Sanford captures it wonderfully. I have read about two thirds of his books and will continue through the rest and then probably start reading them a second time.
I love Lucas Davenport, even with his huge ego, he is the best character in mystery books today. I read lots of other books, but coming back to a Davenport book is a relaxing & very interesting rest.
2nd reading I still love Lucas but I don't like Weather & never did, even in the later books. It was a little bit hard to get back to Lucas Davenport earlier books because I already knew so much more about him & the others that gradually became the main characters in his books. However I didn't mind that at all in this book & realized that I had read it quickly before because it all happened so quickly. The second reading gives you more time to appreciate all of it. There is one more story in the BIG book (3 books in one book) & I have one more to go. These are #'s 7, 8 & 9 of the 26 Davenport books. This story is great & exciting. It keeps you very much into it for a long time.
I’m on my 3rd time around reading this series and what I find most compelling is the characters and their back and forth with one another. They seems so real. I laugh out loud, I agree with them and sometimes I debate within myself their views. The Lucas Davenport character I love so much I wish I could meet him ... but he doesn’t exist ... or maybe he does somewhere just not in exact verbatim of the guy in the book. But I also love Sherrill and Sloan and Del. These characters are just so real! There are other series and books that I like but none, absolutely none, as much as this series!! Makes me think, with a little sadness, how all things come to an end ...
So far ive read 3 Sandford books and each takes climactic stress to an utmost taught string that the reader finds tbemselves saying..."waitaminute!" there's absolutely No Way it would happen like that! His dramatic action sequence moves so quickly that the immersed reader (along w Lucas Davenport) cant catch a breath or a calm thought...which makes one not have time to question the plausibility of the plot...until you do. Then you realize -- nahhhhh it wouldnt have happened like that!
I am an ardent John Sandford fan. I recently purchased and read the complete Prey series and then the complete Flowers series in order, and I'm only sorry I'll have to wait for the next book in both series. Sandford is a novelist with the rare ability to carry over characters and plot elements with complete believabiity while allowing both to develop in interesting, unexpected but natural ways - the only other "serial" novelist who does this nearly as well is Anthony Trollope, and he avoids murders. I re-read these books with pleasure as great or greater than the first reading because the fast-paced narrative and unexpected plot developments pulls you to read fast the first time; the second or third you can pay attention to atmosphere (he's great on significant landscape detail), character growth, and situation development. Sandford writes like a real novelist, not like someone trying to impress academia with his literary exclusivity.
