The final book in the Water Fire Saga kicks off with an excellent description, but a lackluster cover. Where the other covers were quite beautiful and realistic, this one felt a bit cartoonish. As for the storyline, much like that of book three, I felt it meandered and lacked the real action I was looking for. We get to see more of Becca, but again, her parts were glossed over much like that of the characters aside from Sera and Astrid. Unfortunately, it felt like the action-packed parts, like when the characters are captured, are left out and only explained in monologue once everyone comes back together. It seems like this was meant to build suspense, but in the end, it had me skimming through a good portion to get to the real action. Additionally, the volume of description was overbearing at times, and I never really felt the connection I was looking for between Becca and her human love interest. The final chapter wrapped everything in a nice bow for each of the characters, and then the epilogue slammed us with the question of if the book was actually the final book in the series. I had to look it up to see, and to me, that was a bit uncalled for. Perhaps, the author was looking for a spinoff, but what she ended up with was an ending that had me going 'meh.'

Waterfire Saga Book Four Sea Spell A Waterfire Saga Novel Jennifer Donnelly Books Reviews

This book is better than the previous ones. It only focuses on roughly three storylines instead of bouncing all over the place like the previous one. However, the characters still often fall flat, and the various climaxes were not exciting. Although the conclusion drew things together decently, there are still some unanswered questions, especially about the setting. For instance, many fresh water creatures go into the ocean. I assume that's managed by magic, but it's never really answered. Even though this is the final book in the series, the magic system, cultural details, and why-questions were not fully answered.

Events could have had more impact. That said, I like the unity at the end, even if the twists were obvious and predictable for the most part.
While I enjoyed this book, and the others in this series- I feel strongly that these could have been 2 books instead of 4. Some parts were drawn out, while others could have used more flesh. All in all, things were wrapped up nicely, a gap was left for another book, and it flowed well.
This book was AMAZING! I mean there were so many twists and turns, kept me on my toes, made me cheer, made me cry. I finished it the day I got it, it was amazing. I ordered it the day it came out and it was not disappointed. But the fight against Abaddon was a little surprising for me, I mean this is the big bad, the major monster who was built up for three books, I had expected the big battle to be a little more climactic, he was defeated a little too easily. But besides that, great book. However I'm sad that this is the last book, I mean it ended on a cliffhanger! I NEED to find out what happens to that (insert word here) Lucia.
I loved this book! The ending is thrilling and amazing! I couldn't put this book down.Hopefully Jennifer Donnelly makes another series like this!😁😁😁😁😁
** spoiler alert ** I give this book a 4.5 stars. A hideous cover for the book when the other three were absolute gorgeous. Other then that I liked that the whole saga I was able to see the characters grow up. Life events like this can make or break a person. It shows that if you believe it'll happen. The only real reason it's not getting a full 5 stars is because, yes I liked the ending but it could have been more. It gives "Under the Sea" a whole new meaning with this series.

I am glad this author wrote the book in third person. We were able to see from at least every side of the characters and learned how they over came their disability or fear. Ave was finally able to understand that yes the Gods took her sight, but gave her a new sight. She is able to see into the hearts of those around her and to sense danger. Astrid is able to get her voice back and thanks you everyone learned to slay the beast and set free the world.

The author also left it to where there could be another book or a novella because Serafina's cousin is still about and the epilogue show she most likely to show up again. Hopefully if she does make another one she'll get her original illustrater from the other three books and not this one.
This book series is written for young girls in middle school who are into mermaids, and for that it's a good series. The writing is alright, not great, but it's easy enough to follow. The author has her mermaids use ocean-specific language and slang throughout the whole book, which adds a cool element of world building but is at times over done (there's only so many times I want to read the phrase "you go, merl!" or "love you merl!" in the span of a few pages). It is kind of fast paced though, considering the topic matter. The whole series builds up to one main battle, which takes place in this book, but it is over in a flash at the very end. At times the tweeny angsty mermaid emotions got so annoying I had to put the book down (ie when they fell in love with other people after knowing them for a few days tops) but the overarching story is good. I bought and read the entire series because the idea behind the books was interesting. If you can get past the occasionally ridiculous words and actions of the main characters, it's a good series.
Omg ! I can't believe it's the end of one of my favorite series ! The whole storyline was beautiful ! That mermaids had magical spells made sense since in old days siren song and all. The story takes place right after the last one and they finally find away to take back safa home and kingdom. They also find key things to help kill the monster waiting for them in the south sea. The book ends with a kinda cliff hanger and I wonder if down the line there will be another ...)
